Northern Nebraska | Well there's the kicker the food business just needs to explain to the FDA that their additive is generally recognized as safe for human consumption. The USDA doesn't have the time money or staff to test all of these products. They have to take Industries word at face value. It's not until someone questions the safety of said additive that the FDA will launch an investigation which could take years.
There are thousands of products that were food additives before the FDA approval process happened. All of those were deemed safe when Congress passed the new laws in the 58. Researching and Fanning some very bad substances can take decades. It took 18 years to get sassafras be listed. The FDA is still researching and banning Foods that were on that 1958 list.
Let's take a look at the drug side for just one second. There was some news a few months ago about phenylephrine not working according to the FDA. The FDA knew for a long time it was a worthless product but someone had to complain and then their Decades of research into a could commence.
