There has been a reported controversy of sorts that I do not know if it is still considered such. It was told that the main European producers of olive oil export the lower quality and intentionally mislabeled olive oil as being extra virgin when it is not. This is what was reported several years ago. Whether this is true by and large I do not know. The same source reporting this told how there is no push to check these oils being shipped to the states from Italy or wherever else by our governing powers. You can probably find an online article referencing it.
