Most say you need a smoke tube to get the same type and amount of smoke as an offset wood type smoker. I have always been happy with my Oklahoma Joe's. It is the only one I have ever run, My sister has a Rec-Tec that she likes but I would not trade her for. I personally can't tell much if any difference in type of wood for smoking.
