Smut is not unusual but rare occurrence. It usually shows up after plant injury from hail, wind or mechanical. The spores live in the soil all over the US. Rain usually splatter the spores onto the injured plant. Not any real good data on this because it is difficult to replicate the injury in research trials. You should be using a fungicide to protect yield regardless.
