It can be difficult to put an actual number on it, but they do studies to figure things out.

When I was in college in a marketing class, we dove into a study that Campbell’s Soup did. They found that lagging sales wasn’t so much that competitors were beating them out or that people didn’t like their product anymore. What they found was the consumer just needed a reminder that they’re around and to bring back some good memories to get their product on the shopping list. While folks scoff at the idea of sponsoring a nascar race, it can be a similar deal. Reminding folks about corn ethanol and perhaps keeping it in the minds of many. Remember the infamous “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner!” And “Got Milk” adds? They’re legendary and was mostly just to remind folks they’re around and would appreciate your support. No matter who pays for it, in my belief all levels should be promoting, it’s trickledown economics at work.

What’s good for the goose, tends to be good for the gander.
