I'm sure they can go bad.
But they must be tuff. I have seen one knocked off the roof by trees and wrapped around the axle a turn or two and dragging down the field on the ground on the cord with the top mostly busted out.....then later to have a Tupperware bowl glued on top of it for a globe cover and it still worked!
