I think that's the way they are. By terrible do you mean hard to shift, or clashing, grinding the gears, or won't engage into the gears?
Have to come to a complete stop before shifting. If clutch is dragging can cause problems shifting. Does that 424 have the 4 speed shifter and does it work OK?
