Some of the soil conditioners on the market are mostly "snake oil" and will only cost you money. One that I remember was lauryl sulfate, a surfactant often used in shampoo.
Others are organic materials that will not last very long.
I would try planting the area with deep-rooted cover crops between regular crops for a few years.
