Central Coast, California
It really depends on what sort of things you want to see and how far off the direct route you want to go. As you head south Highway 97 and 5 are pretty scenic in themselves. It's been years since I did much stopping as we go along as we are usually driving through. The towns of McCloud, Mt. Shasta and Dunsmit used to be pretty neat to stop at to break up the drive. If you want to go way out of your way detour off back roads to Tule lake, Burney, Fall River.

Along 5 in the Sacramento valley you will see a lot of rice farms just off the road. Also lots of Almonds have been going in. Just cruising through area around red bluff, Maxwell you can see a lot.

Take the back road from Winters next to lake Berryessa, cruise through Pope valley and take the Silverado trail down towards San Francisco.
