coast of Maine | There is no need (here) to ever treat for corn ear worms unless the silk is coming out.The eggs are laid in the silk. There are a couple of insecticides that have ovicidal (egg killing) affect,Lannate being one. Most of your treatment would be directed at larvae and some adults if correct chems are used. When the eggs hatch the ear worm whom gets hatched first(early bird gets the worm) eats all the other eggs and becomes that strong bugger that goes down the silk to eat ear tip. This timing does not apply to other pests such as army worm which needs treatment at signs of damage. Here there is zero need to treat once the silk dries as no worms hatching or eggs laid,,the little bugger you missed is down in side the husk chewing n his supper and is hidden from all chems. The moths come in here on east coast wind storms.None live here all winter. | |
