Thanks for all the replies, kind of reinforced what I had felt.
There was a deal here several years ago where 20 or 30 cows died all pretty close together and the owner was nearly prosecuted for animal cruelty. They were in bad shape, but he always bought the cheapest hay possible and the feeling is it was full of hemlock.
