If you want white, thin down white stain, usually takes 2 coats, 1st to even out bare spots, 2nd to blend different colors. Different color than white, same 1st coat, then thin the color stain you want as a second coat. Remember you can always add more color. Thin as needed and/or more coats to blend. Also I find putting wood up helter skelter is better than all one color in same area and trying to blend that. If you like the shabby chic chippy look, use white paint and hit with very coarse sander until it is the look you like, even down to bare wood in places, then wipe with very thin white stain to blend....James
