Southern Indiana | Educate me. So how big of a problem is poison hemlock, also known as water hemlock. I became aware of it at cattlemans meetings, particularly from one individual who is fighting a one man war against it. It grows 5 feet tall up and down the roads and railroads so I am thinking the war is lost and we will have to live with it. I've been looking for it as I scout pastures and mow grass hay, but I wonder how much has always been here and just wasn't looking for it. At a distance it looks like whitetop but on close inspection the bloom instead of resembling a daisy is made up of hundreds of little white balls and the leaf looks like a fern. My vet says cows naturally know what not to eat, but that sounds a little optimistic. This is what the poison that killed Socrates (or maybe it was Plato, I get them confused) was made from.
What is the agtalk feeling on this. | |
