Subject: RE: Cargill Open Front Hog Buildings

Sumner GA, Located in southwest GA,
We have one, 2 pens, 100 head total capacity, doesn't sound like some, but similar concept. Worked pretty well for hogs, though you had to make sure to keep the water going in summer misting them. We used sprayer hose, now I think I would plumb it with impact sprinklers solid set. Had a bulk feeder that splits the two pens, holds 80-90 bu, held a full load off our feed mill anyway. We washed our floor, had a 1000 gallon tank and electric pump that we used to wash off the floor about twice a week, drained into a lagoon. Worked very well, every once in a while drain would stop up (amazing how a pen of hogs can stuff the run down a 8" pipe) but much much better than a greasy wet muddy dirt lot. Dont use it anymore, we have no hog market left here since 98 when Smithfield bought out Premium Pork and shut it down, the packer we dealt quit buying pretty soon after. Been looking at using that floor with some calves, raising a spring and fall group on it, but still have a few logistics there, few improvements to make. I think now, if we were to raise hogs again, I would be inclined to build a hoop barn to hold them, with a dry scrape, really like the idea of holding them in a barn like that, although I doubt I will ever act on that.
