| My understanding of tornadoes "disappearing" from radar is that it has to do with the vertical angle from the radar site. At greater distances, the curvature of the earth prevents the radar from detecting anything at or near ground level. Rotation higher in the atmosphere can be picked up, but when it drops down too low, radar can no longer see it. This is why storm spotters are still used even with the advanced radar available today.
