If you want to go West rather than East you can try Dauphin Island, AL. While there you can see some nice beaches without a lot of tourists, tour an old fort, visit Bellingrath Gardens and Bayou La Batre. I didn't see Forrest Gump when I visited but it was still a fun place to visit.
