My experience and observation is if you don't do anything with those spots (tillage/tile/etc.), they never dry out and in some cases get bigger and bigger until a seasonal pothole turns into a cattail.slough. Worms don't survive in waterlogged soil for very long, and then you end up with dead spots from lack of tillage/drainage, not over tilling
