Are they bottom drive? I had a bottom drive years ago. The lower chain drive was enclosed and ran in oil. Oil always leaked out and I had bearing issues. Also had issues with keeping the lower drive chain tight, I don't think there was an idler and you tightened it by sliding the bearing holder up?
