Very true on emergence time of the crop vs potential damage. The one time we got dinged hard on pumpkins/squash was 2009 when it took a couple weeks for them to get out of the ground which is why we don't plant that crop until weather is favorable for fast emergence. Or it's June 1st because we HAVE to plant.
