North Central Indiana
All departments and areas are different. To be a paramedic you first have to be a EMT Basic with most EMT classes in my area taking about 6 months couple evenings a week. We had a new guy go through a couple week class for EMT Basic but he lived in a dorm and had 10 hour a day classes. The average Paramedic classes are 16 to 18 months.

To become a Paramedic you have to pass the National Registry computer test after passing an affiliated class . As long as you keep your national Registry Certification current which takes at least 48 hours of training every 2 years as well as a payment you can move to any state and be a Paramedic.

Our full time department requires either Firefighter 1 and 2 or EMT Basic to be hired. Then everyone has to become a Paramedic within 3 years. This allows older guys to get off medic as the burnout is real.
