SW “Ohia”

Paramedic requires a lot of training and continuing education, it’s advanced life support and use of specialized drugs. It’s also a level of knowledge where, for most folks, if you aren’t using it regularly, you’ll start to get rusty.

EMT is much more straightforward. Focus on understanding vitals, bleeding control, oxygen, CPR, basic trauma, etc. Most folks with some level of emergency response experience will be able to handle EMT school and keep their skills long-term even with minimal use.

Which route he wants to take will depend on the department requirements and his career goals. Typically somebody with a FF1 certification will be an EMT, and somebody with a FF2 certification will be a medic. In some areas, especially urban and suburban departments, you need FF2/Medic (or a willingness to complete it shortly after hiring) to be considered for a full-time job. This all varies greatly depending on region but honestly, if a department is willing to pay for Medic school, jump at the opportunity. It’s expensive to pay for yourself.
