I think you hit the nail on the head. Some varieties have same # harvestable ears as planting rate and some are 3-4,000 less. I think some varieties have a higher % of hard seed. Seed companies have found how to lower % hard seed but not eliminate it. And of course there is seed production environmental issues that make things change from one year to the next. I am really glad seed viability and emergence has improved over the years!
