Are you using a shovel or a spade? For your application you need a long handle flat spade. King of Spade brand is top quality.

When you get it, grind off any coating on the blade. Polish it to a good shine and keep it that way. Experiment to see how well that works.

If it doesn’t, try coating the blade in graphite paint. Sometimes the polished blade is better than graphite, sometimes not.

The “mud shovels” covered in holes don’t work in our clay at all.
