for the combine & cart, we use the cheap hand held VHFs..........range is like 5 miles line of sight. ours are Maxon's and have charging stations you drop them in at night. also use them for loading trucks outa the bins, so you don't have to be in sight of the driver all the time.

Nextels can be made to talk between each hand held and not by way of cell towers, you just change a setting in each phone. also, you can set a Nextel to signal a certain number when you touch the transmit key without picking a number beforehnd. but only one number can be set to do so. or you can set up a group, and each time you key it, it will signal each number setup in a particular group. several groups can be setup if need be.
