Just spread it thick and turn on the water, best results for me was spreading in the rain and ignore it, seems like any attempts at covering were too deep. Not much different than spreading rye in standing notil corn and getting nice stand if it rains ,and you control the rain!! Residue of dead lawn will help retain moisture.

There was a good reason to seed it thick. Most grasses and forages produce seeds with variable thicknesses of seed coats. Some germinate the first year, but if they die out, some more germinate the second year, third, fourth, etc... Natures way of establishing grass stands.

Seed companies have been scarifying seed, which is running it through a machine to scratch off the seed coat, so it germinates the first year. This is to save seed, so a lot lower seeding rate is required. The downside is that you may need to reseed the second time if it doesn't make it.

But if you've got lots of seed, put it on thick, if that works for you.
