Faunsdale, AL | Empty cans were rendered safe by hammering the jagged edges left by the can opener flat against the inside of the can. I get the idea that many canned items came in much larger sizes of cans than today, maybe institutional/food service sizes were more common, but my mother always described using them to keep milk in and cool it by immersing in the cool water pumped by their windmill. | |
