E. Kansas | Deere Z950M 72" here, and I love it. Had a Deere 777 72" for well over 15 years prior and it was great.
Regarding your Z950R deck height at only extreme up or down, I would think it would be like the Z950M deck adjustment. The Z950M deck adjustment height wheel allows lots of height adjustment range, and deck can be raised to the extreme up position and locked there by turning the knob above the height adjustment wheel, so the height adjustment wheel does not have to changed. I don't utilize that feature, but it's probably useful to some. Maybe something is not right with your height adjustment wheel or the lock up knob above it?
