SW Iowa | There is a lot of overlap of companies using the same engines/hydro units, and most make a range of models that at least the upper end of most lines is pretty well built. Toro/Exmark, Hustler, Bad Boy, Country Clipper, Dixie Chopper, Grasshopper, Graveley, Kubota, JD, Ferris all seemed to me like they had pretty good stuff when I was mower shopping a few years ago. So a lot of the differences from one brand to another are going to be in the deck and service/parts availability what dealers you have within a reasonable distance.
I was ready to buy a new lower-commercial grade Toro but the dealer wouldn't throw in an extra set of blades at full asking price (this was spring 2021 and everyone was scared of not getting any more inventory due to COVID production issues, I think) so I ended up doing a bit more shopping and found what seemed like a better relative deal on a used 60" Kubota ZD326. Being full-on commercial it's bigger and taller and heavier in relation to the deck than some, and I think it may have been easier to get closer to stuff with a smaller form factor drive unit, but I've thus far been super happy with the deck and overall build quality. And being diesel is really handier for me as I don't burn that much gas in anything else and diesel mower basically eliminated the need to keep a gas barrel at the farm. Kubota is one of the few that uses a proprietary hydro setup so I hope it is well designed enough I don't find out how much parts cost. | |
