As far as the solenoids and the back EMF, It sounds as if the Nano and the solenoids are common at your auxiliary fuse panel. I think that having the solenoids connected directly to the battery separately in a sense would be benefical.

As far as learning to write some code and do some basic things, it might be a rewarding hobby for a Winter Time activity depending on your situation. I have some formal electronics training which obviously is useful but not essential.

There are many decent videos on You Tube that will lead you along. You don't need to understand all the workings and can just work with their examples and make minor changes of your own and observe the results. Start at the shallow end of the pool and don't expect to create an auto pilot system the first Winter. There are plenty of opportunities for frustration but in ways that seem weird to many, I feel satisfaction in limited successes .

Some might say it as useful as completing a jigsaw puzzle in that it really serves no useful purpose. This is likely true but hopefully exercises my declining mind a bit.

Some folks can't understand why I like to do this. I don't understand why some climb mountains either.

Keep thinking.
