NC Kansas | If a JD air seeder is set up correctly the ONLY ONLY advantage I think a planter has is the precise seed metering and seed savings. Yes, with ever changing seed sizes a drill is a constant moving target on getting your population right, but there are solutions out there to help with that through Loup and now precision planting I believe. They also offer section control on the newer hydraulic drive carts, so that helps with overlap. We live in rolling terraced farmland country and being able to harvest beans any which way have to is helpful, (not needing to worry about running rows parallel with the cutter bar and stalling or breaking something).
Pros-
quicker canopy/better weed suppression
better feeding/harvestability
No yield difference that I've seen and we've done it all from 7.5" to 10" to 15" to 30".
Cons-
Seed waste/metering accuracy
Is a 15" planter probably the absolute best? Yes, but if you have other needs for an air seeder then don't be afraid of using it on beans.
