Don't really agree with your sentiment. One example of our stuff. May not all meet code but it works well and is safe. Probably safer than some of the so called weather tight stuff.
As to the original posters question, we have used both twist locks of various sizes for some motor hookups, but mainly use 50 amp "welder plugs" now for our various motor plugs. Have one of these on the end of a heavy cord and so far have been fairly pleased with it in the short while we have had it.
