RR Valley, ND; MN native | Farm did not get electric hooked up until '44. Dad said they had it wired for a while before the power was finally available. Farm is close to town and Dad told of looking at the street lights from the farm yard. He would have been about 11.
When the power was finally on, he said he went into each building to turn on the lights and it was "magical". No need to walk across the yard with a kerosene lantern to the dairy barn and hang it on a nail when milking. A couple years later they got a milker too.
Just last summer I removed the last of the 1944 wiring from the barn as its in poor shape and will need to get demo'd. The stuff was brittle for sure. Power had been on in there up to maybe 5yrs ago or so. | |
