SW Illinois | we run our N540C at various angles with the corn rows depending on the operator that sets the AB line. We've had angles as extreme as 45 degrees and as close as 5-10 degrees. We are on 10 inch centers and don't have any issues. corn yield ranges from 140 to 240 depending on year and field, non chopping head so plenty of residue to go through. No tilling into standing stalks I just accept that you don't get them all cut through and likely have some beans planted into a stalk instead of dirt. Just make sure there is enough down force to get the unit into the ground and to close the trench. I don't think more down pressure really changes the hair pinning, I feel its more moisture dependent. Can't say we've seen a yield difference in worked ground vs no till beans and haven't seen a yield difference due to the angle they were planted. We still plant 150,000 so maybe our sloppy planter/drill work is compensated by too much seed.
Only thing I'd change about the drill is adding down force to the wings. Haven't looked too much if there's an aftermarket for it or not. | |
