Subject: Alcohol and fructose

Pittsburg, Kansas
Interesting ideas.

My first answer will be the most accurate, I don't know.

That said, I do have a few ideas and opinions.

First off alcohol and fructose are metabolized in the same exact pathways in the liver. Drink too much alcohol, fatty liver. Drink too much fructose, fatty liver. This is a known and proven fact.

Too much alcohol in the blood is toxic. Too much glucose in the blood is toxic. This also is known and proven.

The body gives priorities to energy metabolism. Alcohol is given top priority because it is most toxic and dangerous. The body tries to utilize what it can and get rid of the rest. Same for glucose levels over about a teaspoon equivalent in the bloodstream. This could be controversial but is my understanding.

Glucose glycates red blood cells. The higher the glucose levels, the more glycation. This is what HbA1c measures. The method of measurement measures ONLY glycation produced by glucose.

Alcohol and fructose also damages red blood cells. But A1c test does not measure this type of damage. This is my understanding. It may be incorrect. If it is correct, alcohol and fructose damage blood cells like high levels of glucose does. We simply don't have a measurement for it. This could be wrong but it is my understanding.

So excess alcohol and fructose may be just as unhealthy as high blood sugar levels. With no way of knowing the damage by blood test. We have to wait for fatty liver diagnosis.

It is my belief that the body is designed to handle a small amount of alcohol and fructose. Fruit in season makes us temporarily insulin resistant so we will gain weight before a long winter when food historically was scarce. 150 or more years ago we didn't eat fruit or drink juice year round like is available now.

My personal belief is that small to modest amounts of alcohol or fructose the body can deal with sufficiently. In a metabolically healthy person. High amounts of either or both is a bad thing. Excess amounts regularly and long term is a probable early death sentence. Very bad for the health.

My opinion, and it is worth what you paid for it.
