Lots of theories on how to handle new pairs, one is always keep the calf between you and the cow, it helps but I can tell you from personal experience it does not always work....
Edit: Garvo I think your old vet is all wet on the cleaning thing, I have noticed that the protective ones often get worse for the first day or 2.
