Elizabethtown,KY | I was in my senior year of college and on schedule to graduate in May of 1970 when they moved 2 soils classes I needed for my Agronomy degree from spring to fall. I had to come back in the fall for an additional semester because of this. I lost my 2-S deferment after 4 years in school and became 1-A. My number was 97 and anything under 150 was going to be drafted.
Somehow I was able to enlist in the 100 Division Army Reserves in Louisville in October of '70, I didn't have to go take basic until of March of '71, so I was able to graduate in December of '70 without getting jerked out of school. I had passed my physical that summer, so I felt very lucky to not be drafted before I could enlist.
I spent 6 years in Headquarters Company in Louisville as a clerk typist for about 4 years and after 4 years I made Staff Sergeant and they had me in charge of the duty soldiers on drill week-ends and I left at the end of my term. | |
