Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
This seems consistent with a problem I have from time to time. If I have a battery that is really discharged, my "smart" chargers will indicate that the battery has failed. I check the voltage with a meter. I take an old fashioned "dumb" charger and put it on the battery for a while at a low setting, I leave it on low and come back after a while, disconnect the charger and test the voltage.

If the voltage has come up some, I then try the smart charger again. Often the smart charger then thinks that the battery is OK and proceeds to charge it. If the battery has in fact failed then this approach doesn't work and its time for a replacement battery.

I believe you may be doing the same thing by using the 1 AMP NoCo to bring the other NoCo up in charge a bit and then it can be recharged normally. I believe it is important to use a low setting or your 1 AMP NoCo when trying this trick. Don't get in a hurry and try to rush things by using a larger charger.
