Does ones sides stupidly allow for the other side to be just as stupid? Anyone remember Adam Smith? Tariffs and the focus of countries wanting to run trade surpluses are one of the main tenants shown to be a false in "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" aka Wealth of Nations. Tariffs don't work and can create monopolies that prey on the very people the tariffs were meant to help in the first place. Mercantilism was thankfully shown to be backwards thinking but we are coming back around to it. Between that and gold being a countries wealth, we are slowly going back to the 1700's with regards to economic policy.
