Don't use brake cleaner in the bore. Brake cleaner works for gunky stuff, but that's not the problem here. It will just wash off any oil and dry up the bore and make the piston/rings drag, if you get them to move. I'll second the diesel fuel/atf. Sounds like rings are stuck to the cylinder wall.
As easy as it is to do, I'd pop the head off and look at what you have. Usually can use the gaskets back, so all you have is a little time invested.
