Rate controller usually has a foot master switch? Auto means it sees the rate controller so it won't let you try and change away from it. That's a good thing. 

Unless you or someone cut or spliced into the foot switch and that's where the height is feeding? Or cut the foot switch off for a hand toggle switch? Might get some other responses in Precision Talk too
