Subject: RE: Reduced bloat alfalfa for grazing

Up here I grow AC Grazeland. It’s a DLF Pickseed bloat reduced variety, with a low initial rate of digestion. Basically, the cell walls of the leaves are thicker which causes them to digest slower. Not sure if it’s available there.

Works good. I’ve turned yearlings out into prebloom second cut, on an early dewy morning and had no issues. Yes, I was doing everything “wrong” to trial it. Even had a few neighbours call to tell me the cattle were in the second cut and going to bloat.

It is a coarser alfalfa and lower feed value than a multifoliate. I’ve been growing it for 20 years and feel it is a very worthwhile tradeoff.

In the interest of full disclosure my wife does sell it however I do use it on all my pasture.
