Subject: Re: Farm Vehicles on Public Roads

Kingston,Mi
Age on the road is a problem, a contractor that hauls liquid manure was empting a pit, 2 Challenger Go Fast's were pulling 7700 gallon Houle tanks. Niether would give way on a gravel road, result of this game of chicken is one in the county road ditch several hundred yards from a major river, and it leaked. Since the crowd involved are the self reliant brand of Christian (no slam on Christian or self reliance), they tried to get out of the ditch with their equipment. One of the neighbors spotted them and alerted the road commission who contacted the state police. When the authoities turned up they put a stop to the failed attempt to pull the Challenger and tank from the ditch. They ordered up a wrecker and an enviormental crew. When the tractor was back on the road and the damage to the road and ditch were being attended to. The State Police officer was gathering info and ask who had been driving the Challenger and 12 or 14 year old fessed up that he was driving for his fathers business. The State Police officer ordered the father to drive the rig back to the farm where he recieved the tickets and some insruction in labor law. Michigan not only allows heavy and long loads driven by cdl carrying drivers but the ever intertaining "recreational combo" , this is the ever popular 4 door, 8 ft pickup, a large 5th wheel trailer and as much power boat as you can afford. Michigans length law use to be 60 ft., now some trailer rigs in logging are 75ft. these recreational combos are staring to approach the 60 ft. limit with the Beverly Hillbillies at the wheel.
