Subject: RE: on demand hot water heater

Madison Co. Virginia
I found a lightly-used Navien npe-240s2 on Marketplace, and installed it myself in my dairy barn. It was replacing an electric 80-gallon heater. It works well, but is slow, which is understandable. I was used to 10-gpm of 150f hot water, and now I'm restricted to 3-5gpm of 180f hot water. Ultimately, it's cleaning the pipelines better, so I'm happy.

There's no way I would consider an electric on-demand water heater. When they start talking about 27-kw of power to run those things, I'd be getting nervous about all the electrical upgrades needed to handle the load.

Hard water is a big deal for on-demand heaters. I have very soft water, and the heater came from an area with even softer water. I've heard of some folks dealing with such hard water that they had to heat water indirectly with a on-demand heater; the heater heats a transfer fluid, and the transfer fluid runs through a separate heat exchanger to heat water.

Edit to add: A propane or NG water heater doesn't require much power. Mine came with a 120v cord, so it's just plugged into a common 15-amp receptacle.
