The NH3 changing from liquid to gas is dropping the temperature to possibly below 0F at the knife. The boiling NH3 is pulling the heat out of the surrounding air and fertilizer.
When moving in the ground the friction and soil temp keep it from freezing.
Try shutting flows off and driving farther before lifting the knife out of ground?
