NE Iowa | Tandem scrapers have been very common behind JD scraper tractors for well over 15 years - maybe 20. Even occasionally see triples. The 2nd pan is hardly doing finish work - it digs better than the front one (assuming the front one gets loaded first) as a loaded front pan really nails the tractor's back axle to the ground. I've run tandems doing testwork - you can make a very big tractor seem weak doing that work. And the difference between a rookie (me) and a skilled operator is HUGE! It would have been nice to get enough time in them to get closer to being a skilled operator. Good ones never have to look back and can carry on a conversation about anything while their hand is dancing over the SCV controls like a piano - always making small adjustments just based on tractor sound and seat of the pants feel. A quick glance in the mirror to confirm each pan is full, start pushing the tranny stick forward until you find top gear, and on to the dump site. Rinse and repeat.
I would like to pull a couple big pans with this new 9RX - that would be fun. | |
