NE MO | I’ve owned several mulching units. Started with a skid steer and fecon mulcher back in 2013. I absolutely hated running it. Yes it worked for field edges but you couldn’t get high enough to actually make a difference with low hanging branches. 100hp is bare minimum, high flow is a must and performance is still lackluster. Carbide teeth are a home regardless of what any salesman tells you. Sharp teeth that you keep sharp are a must for any form of production. It’s literally the difference of cutting a tree down with a sledge hammer versus a ax. I ran the skid for a year, then a hydroax (oversized wheel loader with upgraded hydraulics and a mulching head) then eventually to 50k lb + excavators. A excavator is the ticket with field edges. I’ve done hundreds of miles of them. Having the reach to effectively trim branches and clear trees is where it’s at. A drum mulcher is what you need, fecon, fae, cimaf are the top 3. Cimaf gets my vote for the best with efficiency, cost per hour, etc. | |
