Not knowing your operation, size, needs, wants. For me a grain leg would not pencil out. Ever.
What is your combine? Bushels per day? Total acres, crops, average moisture?
I have neighbor who does not dry corn. He combines *WAG by me* 30% high moisture in harvestor silo. 20% silage in 24’ silo, and bunker, rest dry corn. He waits till @17% has air on bins, freezes it. Has harvested mid winter, or spring if needed. He feels it works for him.
I did corn in field one winter. I was amazed field loss was much less than I expected. But I found it stressful.
If you have two semi trucks you will be hauling to your bins? A pit, some type of drive over, easy dump of some kind IMO well worth it. Ideally so both traps could be opened by driver, staying in truck, closed remotely. At most they start auger/leg, dump, drive off.
Of course you can plan for a leg later. I don’t think they are worth it for most.
Your corn normally goes into wet corn holding bin? *in my area*. The dryer calls for it, output is blown to storage bin? You can set +30’ 10”+ auger from bin to fill trucks. 15 minutes max? 3 phase power bigger motors are not so $$$.
For me redneck pit works great. 400 bu box on auger. +600 bu grain cart. Wife sitting in pickup with dog, her phone, book to turn on as I dump, off as empty. I dump over 2/3, get off chat, check bin, dump rest combine is just showing corn over tank.
Way too slow for bigger operations.
