NEMO | I've only seeded a pure alfalfa stand once in my life. Did it in late August. Beginners luck as that stand was thick and lasted at least 7 years, maybe longer.
Why did you add barley if you wanted a pure alfalfa stand?
You might be surprised how much alfalfa is really there.
I've drilled a lot of a grass/legume mix the last few years in the spring. Last year was a flop with the drought, but the previous years had really good success with around 26 pounds to the acre of this mix:
20% Alfalfa
20% Red Clover
20% Kentucky 31 Fescue
20% Intermediate Rye
20% Timothy
At times the alfalfa seems more than plentiful at 20% of the above mix.
So, again you might be surprised how much alfalfa you will have out there. Good luck.
