Most of the debt is held by US citizens so there is no whip it clean. We have been running these big deficits since Reagan (percentage wise, excluding some of Clinton years) so this is nothing new. The national debt was a major part of the 1992 presidential race, we have managed to keep things going ever since. It will likely keep going on longer than most of us anticipate.
