Holly Hill, SC | Looking at replacing or buying in addition to my trusty old JD 4730 sprayer (currently 4900 hrs) a new JD 408R with 100ft booms. Had some questions.
Things I have loved with my 4730: Can see my front right wheel in the row and can navigate turns in crop with little to no crop run over (will miss this). Can move my receiver or monitor to other tractor or vice versa. Auto trac and swath control activations paid for when new in 2007 and hasn't cost me anything since. Plenty of space on the platform to carry extra chemicals. (sometime use rinse tank water to increase acreage, or change my mind on rates or needed chemicals), Reliable: maybe 14k in parts including one set of tires (radiator, solution pump, pins, bushings, valves, + misc) over 16 years and 195,000 acres.
New 408R: (Keep in mind I do not buy for resale value, I buy for what I need) Minimum requirements: autotrac (straight trac AB line), swath control, (no auto boom height control), No JD link, SF1 will be fine, minimum lights, air ride seat, no chemical inductor (haven't used mine on 4730 in years), Poly tank (will I regret this? Currently have stainless), steel boom (did JD finally get the paint to hold up? Heard they had some problems in the past), no air purge, no front fill, no exact apply (will use the proper tip for the application rate and range of speed applied), manual solution control (will use a tender 95% of the time)
I do not like paying subscriptions. Currently what options do I have to get auto trac and swath control? What will this cost after the 1st two years? SF1 fine. Can a 3000 receiver still be mounted to these machines? No option to remove the integrated so I guess it doesn't matter. What about the Gen 5 monitor? When is this an option for this sprayer? Since I have been so happy with my 4730, do I even consider another brand?
Thanks for any thoughts on the matter. (If it matters: I farm 2800 acres including corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and sesame)
